90-Day Goal Planning Template
Goal Planning
Where potential becomes performance — one quarter at a time
A free resource from Goal Machine by Darren Whitaker-Barnett
Purpose
Annual goals are set in Quarter 1 and forgotten by Quarter 2. This template works on a 90-day cycle — close enough to feel urgent, far enough to allow real progress. It is for individuals who want to close the gap between what they intend and what they actually do, and for leaders who want to build that discipline across their teams.
Modern work moves faster than a twelve-month planning cycle allows. A 90-day horizon creates enough urgency that daily actions feel connected to outcomes, and enough time for those actions to compound into genuine progress. It is the rhythm the Goal Machine is designed around: set direction for the year, execute in quarters, review at week six, reset at week thirteen.
Direction (Where am I going?), Why (Why does it matter?), and How (What am I doing daily?) — the first three principles of the Goal Machine, applied in sequence. The weekly tracker also builds the Competence feedback loop.
How to use this resource
Firstly, you can use this resource as is or recreate it as a spreadsheet if that makes it easier. Complete the Quarter at a Glance section first. The North Star keeps the three goals connected to something larger. Then complete each goal block — do not skip the Why or Obstacle fields. These are the two that most people leave blank, and the two that matter most when motivation fades in week seven.
Put a calendar reminder for week six. The mid-quarter review is not optional — it is where you find out whether you are on track before it is too late to change anything.
At week thirteen, complete the End-of-Quarter Reflection before setting next quarter's goals. The learning from this quarter is the foundation of the next one.

At the end of each week, note one win, one learning, and your confidence level (1–5) for the quarter. Week 6 = mid-quarter review. Week 13 = reset point.

A final note
The first law of Goal Machine states that goals set direction, but systems create performance. This template is a piece of that system — the structure that connects what you want to achieve to what you will do tomorrow morning. Ninety days is long enough for a daily action to compound into something real, and short enough that the goal never feels too distant to matter. Use this template every quarter. Review it honestly. Let the pattern build. That is how intentions become outcomes.
